Time for a More Active Lifestyle, Perhaps?
The researchers from the University Of California San Diego School Of Medicine first revealed this shocking finding on the American Journal of Epidemiology. They discovered that employees who sat for over 10 hours every day and who has low physical activity biologically age eight years faster.
What They Found:
The study recruited 1,500 female participants who are aged 64 to 95. They got this group from a national research that wanted to investigate the chronic illnesses of postmenopausal women. They discovered that women who remained sedentary for over 10 hours and did less than 40minutes of physical activity daily have shorter telomeres. They are the small caps on the ends of DNA strands that guard the reliability of chromosomes.
The Journal states that “telomeres progressively shorten with age…reduced telomere length has been associated with cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and major cancers.” Their research reveals that your cells age faster if you continue to have a sedentary lifestyle. The lead author Aladdin Shadyab, PhD, even adds that biological age doesn’t necessarily equal chronological age.
Shadyab recommends women who sat longer to at least exercise for half an hour daily as it shortens the length of the telomere.
